The Azores - São Jorge Island
São Jorge has a great deal more to offer the visitor. There area unusual jajãs - or flat areas - at the foot of high cliffs, interesting examples of Azorean religious art and bedspreads with traditional patterns woven on handlooms. São Jorge is an immense watercolor painted in infinite shades of green from the pale green of the grass peeping among the dark green foliage of the bushes covering the ravines that plunge vertically into the sea. It is this predominance of green that makes the island so delightful and inviting, touring a landscape that has retained its primitive beauty.

Geography

Along island that is 56 Km in length and with a maximum width of just 8 Km, São Jorge covers an area of 246.25 km². It was formed as a result of successive volcanic eruptions in a straight line from which craters still remain. Its central platform is at an average height of 700 meters and 1.053 meters at the highest point. The craggy coast is almost vertical, particularly in the north, and is interrupted by small flat areas known as jajãs. The island is situated at a point 28º 33' west and 38º 24' north.
